Faith summit a good opportunity for parents

There's no higher calling than shepherding your children in their faith. Yes, there are many things to parenting. But faith is of seminal importance to many families, and becoming better equipped to train your child in the way he or she should go, as the Scripture points out in Proverbs 22:6, is of utmost importance.

A Southeast Missourian story recently highlighted an upcoming Parent Summit at Lynwood Baptist Church in Cape Girardeau. The summit will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and is promoted as a resource for parents to help their children in the faith journey. This is based on the Milestone Strategy, which as reported in the story, includes four milestones. No. 1 is to become the primary faith trainer for children in preschool. The second is for youngsters 7 to 11 years old and includes information on salvation and baptism. Milestone three is focused on children 9 to 12 years old and helping parents prepare for adolescence. And the final milestone looks at purity and is for parents of children 12 to 14 years of age.

Lynwood has held the summit two years, and this year they have actively opened it to the public. If you have participated in past summits, organizers encourage you to also consider attending this year's event.

"It's very beneficial to come back and build on what you learned before," Kevin Coffee, discipleship pastor at Lynwood, said. "It will help those who are already using the Milestone Strategy, but it will also help any parent."

Thank you to Lynwood Baptist Church and the organizers for providing this opportunity. Thanks also to other churches and organizations that offer valuable resources on parenting and growing in faith in God.
