Get those pencils. It's back-to-school time

Many area students will return to class this week. While students may not be fully ready to leave summer behind, there's still an exciting feeling about a new school year.

Education plays a vital role in society. It's a building block for success. As the 2014-15 school year begins, here are a few thoughts as you pack lunches and prepare for the bake sales ahead.

1) Thank a teacher. The education community has a tough job. Teaching a class of 30 students is no small task. The good ones have a special ability to explain information. They teach to see the proverbial lightbulbs go off. Thank you to each of our educators who go above a beyond.

2) Get involved. Children whose parents are plugged in are at an advantage. Talk with your student. Find out what they like about school, and learn their interests. Follow up with them on homework.

3) Life outside of school. Reading, writing and arithmetic are important, but there's value in participating in activities outside the classroom. Music, sports, art -- all can provide fun acitivities while also providing an educational benefit.

We hope all the parents, students and educators have a productive school year. Here's to learning.
