Cape Splash, Central Pool still popular summer attractions

This was a different summer. July and August are typically months of warm temperatures and humidity. We caught a break from the heat for a good part of the summer, which was nice for many who enjoyed time at the ballpark, on vacation or engaging in other summertime festivities. However, it also meant that you might not have been as inclined to hit the pool as much.

That appears to be the case for some, according to a story by Southeast Missourian reporter Samantha Rinehart. Numbers were slightly down for Cape Girardeau's Cape Splash Family Aquatic Center and the Central Municipal Pool this summer, said Patrick Watson of the Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department.

Though fewer people came out, the facilities still offer plenty of fun for families. According to the story, more than 315,000 visitors have come out to Cape Splash since 2010. The center is open through Labor Day weekend, though beginning Wednesday both the water park and pool will be open only on weekends. The pool, once the bubble is up in September, will then be open every day.

Cape Splash has been a nice addition to the city. Most any day you'll find a good crowd spending time in the lazy river and the other attractions. The water park, as reported in May, could add a slide by next summer. Central's pool also remains an important part of Cape Girardeau.

School begins for many area students this week, but the warmth of summer will likely be with us for several weeks. We hope you enjoy some time in the water.
