Letter to the Editor

Prop K is needed for kids

Recently, there have been letters to the editor opposing Proposition K. The opposition is sending a clear message that one penny for every $4 is not a worthy investment in the future of our children. How can we not afford this? We have children in crisis waiting eight weeks to see a psychiatrist and we should tell these families they should be satisfied because there are "plenty of services" in place? We should tell the 240 homeless children this is just "too bad?"

The children's service fund model has worked in other counties in our state. The accountability of annual audits and ensuring quality programs receive funding have resulted in positive outcomes. The statute requires that this fund be run effectively and efficiently to protect funds meant for improving children's lives. Do we not trust the citizens in our own community to identify and make decisions about what our kids need? Are we going to rely on the state and federal government to dictate what programs are funded and at the capacity that they see fit? These are folks who don't live, work, or call Cape Girardeau County their home. We do.

My career over the past 40 years included teaching in the public schools and providing social services. These issues affected all social and economic groups. These are our children, our grandchildren, our neighbors. How can we say "no?" Vote "yes" for Prop K Aug. 5. Send a clear message that we care about our children and they are worth this investment.
