Church helps community through free-of-charge weekend

The things we say and do matter. It sounds trite, but the reality is others watch how we respond to situations. Scripture says it clearly that others will know we are followers of Christ if we love one another.

Recently, one local church took this command to the streets. Mount Auburn Christian Church hosted a three-day, free-of-charge event.

The goal was for church attendees to reach out to the community and help with everyday tasks, showing God's love.

A few of the service opportunities included handing out bottles of water along the La Croix trail, serving a dinner to foster parents and help with repairs at the Hope Children's Home in Jackson. About 100 people participated.

Church pastor Casey Elmore told the Southeast Missourian in an email that while many people who attend the church volunteer in other ways, this was a chance to come together as a congregation to benefit the area.

"At Mount Auburn Christian Church, we take seriously the fact that God is love. The goal for our Free of Charge weekend is simple, really ... to get out and love the community through a variety of service projects together," Elmore said.

The church is interested in holding another free-of-charge weekend. To learn more about the church, visit mtauburncc.org or call 803-2050.

Hats off to Mount Auburn Christian Church. It's encouraging to see churches and other organizations collectively reach out to the community. We know there are others who do similar work. To you, we say thank you and God bless.
