Southeast Hospital ushered in a new era in neonatal care on Tuesday, July 8, moving five babies into the new, family-centered Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

The eight-suite unit replaces an older facility. The new unit consists of single-family suites, creating private areas for families to bond with their babies. The well-baby nursery and family waiting room also were renovated as part of the project.

The area is designed to keep noise levels to a minimum and has subdued lighting. The unit has a world-class neonatal monitoring system. Another new feature is the addition of a NICVIEW camera system. Funded by the SoutheastHEALTH Auxiliary, it provides a secure video link for families to check on their infants around the clock.

Lanija Patterson's daughter, My'Jalah, was one of those being cared care in the NICU on Tuesday. Born prematurely on June 28, the baby is steadily improving under the care of neonatologist Paul A. Caruso, MD, medical director of the unit.

In addition to the expert care provided by Dr. Caruso and the nursing staff, Lanija says she likes the comfortable surroundings. "There's so much more room," she says. "It's really nice."
