Whiffle ball tourney supports good causes

Professional baseball's All-Star game in scheduled for next week in Minnesota. The Midsummer Classic will feature many of the game's best, and the Home Run Derby is always fun. But there's another "classic" game coming up this week locally.

The Summer Classic will be held Friday through Sunday at Arena Park. The Whiffle ball tournament will include good-natured fun, and on Saturday there will be a home run derby.

David Unterreiner, the organizer, was behind a similar tournament called Whackfest for 16 years. The playing field was local backyards.

This year's event should provide more room for players and spectators alike.

Proceeds from the tournament benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, according to Unterreiner. Those interested in participating in the Home Run Derby can do so for $10, with the funds benefiting the Boys and Girls Club of Cape Girardeau.

There is still time to register a team for the tournament. Registration may be done at the United Way of Cape Girardeau at 430A Broadway or online at capegirardeausummerclassic.com. The cost is $150.

The tournament is sponsored by USBank and Notre Dame Regional High School. Its partner in the event is K103's Country Cares for St. Jude Kids Radiothon.

This should be a fun event with plenty of excitement for the players and spectators.
