Church, farm tours offer chance to know Jackson

The city of Jackson is in the midst of a yearlong celebration of its bicentennial.

On Sunday, June 29, the city will celebrate its religious heritage with a walking tour of six uptown churches.

The event, hosted by the Jackson Ministerial Alliance, will take participants to the First Baptist Church, New McKendree United Methodist Church, Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the First Presbyterian Church, Emanuel United Church of Christ and St. Paul Lutheran Church.

Jackson has rich history in its churches. All of the churches on the tour have congregations that began in the 1800s. There will be displays that provide information on the Old Bethel Baptist Church, which opened in 1806, and Old McKendree, founded in 1819.

Speaking of Jackson tours, the Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce will host an agribusiness tour on July 16. Stops include the Birk cattle farm and the Rick Aufdenberg farms in Jackson and Tribute Farms in Benton, Mo., an irrigated dairy farm.

Both of these events are free and give area residents a chance to explore the culture of Jackson. For the farm tour, which is for adults only, one may RSVP by July 11 to the chamber office at 243-8131 or email Cheryl at assistant@jacksonmochamber.org.
