Armed Forces Day: A salute to our heroes

Editor's note: The following editorial has been corrected. Armed Forces Day is Saturday.

Saturday is Armed Forces Day. As the Department of Defense notes on its website, the effort to start a holiday to recognize members of the military was started by President Harry S. Truman.

The day was officially named armed Forces Day in 1949 when Defense Secretary Louis Johnson noted the holiday would replace the different Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force Days.

While it may not be widely celebrated, it's an opportunity for us to thank those individuals, past and present, who have put their lives on the line in the name of freedom. The men and women in the military, along with families of service members, make a great sacrifice on our behalf. We are grateful.

To all those who serve our country proudly, we extend our appreciation.
