Congratulations to local high school graduates

Area high schools have hosted their proms in recent weeks, a sure sign that graduation is near for a number of students.

If you have not already, check out semissourian.com for photo galleries from the dances. The photos capture some memorable moments.

Commencement ceremonies have begun, and more are on the way this week. With this in mind, we offer three pieces of advice.

* Enjoy this time. Unfortunately we sometimes get into the habit of counting down the days until something happens. Graduation is one of these events. But take time to enjoy it. Don't wish time away. Sure, there are plenty of things ahead. But finishing high school is an accomplishment.

* Thank others. While the graduates put in the work to finish their degrees, behind each young person are important people who've provided support: a parent, grandparent, teacher or mentor. Let these folks know how much you appreciate their support and care.

* Dream big. You will be asked this question many times, "What are you doing next?" For some, it's college. Others may go to a trade school, the military or join the work force. These all are good options. But think big.

What do you want to accomplish in life? What do you enjoy? How can you use your talents to help others? We realize many of you have already made the decision about the next step. That's great. But keep dreaming.

Congratulations to the graduates and families. We hope you have fun, and safe, celebrations with family and friends.
