Take time to thank teachers

This week is Teacher Appreciation Week. It's an opportunity to recognize those educators who have made a difference in your life or the lives of your children.

On Wednesday night the Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce recognized its Educators of the Year. Recipients include the following: Beth St. John, Jackson High School; Heather Miller, high school special education teacher; Jason Bruns, Jackson Middle School; Lisa Goodwin, Orchard Elementary School; and Tammy Mueller, St. Paul Lutheran School.

Most of us can identify one or more teachers who made a strong impression on us. It may have been a history teacher with a gift of storytelling. A math instructor who simplified hard-to-understand problems. Or a science teacher who brought out our curiosity.

Good teachers have a gift for explanation and have patience with their pupils who seek to learn new things. For many, it's a calling.

Many good teachers are heading to school before the sun comes up and may not get home until dark. They spend extra time helping students reach their potential. We appreciate this dedication.

The semester is winding down for local schools. This time of year gives us an opportunity to thank our local educators. We hope you join us in expressing your appreciation this week.
