DIY ways to store your jewelry

Old picture and window frames can be used to store jewelry in a unique way. (Laura Simon ~ lsimon@semissourian.com)

Looking for a unique way to store your jewelry? You can do a lot of cool things with old picture and window frames. Here are a couple of ideas:

Idea No. 1:

Paint an old picture frame in a fun color. We just use spray paint. You will need jute twine (find it at a craft or home improvement store) and a staple gun.

Make a knot in the end of the jute and, starting at the top of the back of the frame, staple the jute to the frame using the knot as the end so it won't pull through. Next, string the jute to the other side of the frame at an angle about halfway down or so, then pull it tight and staple. Repeat by stringing to the other side of the frame at an angle and stapling again. Repeat until you get the frame covered in a pattern you like. On the last staple, before you cut the jute, make sure you leave enough to knot it so the jute will not pull through. You can add fabric or felt flowers to the frame, or just leave it plain. Attach jewelry with clothespins -- this works great for photos or hair bows, too!

Idea No. 2:

For the window frame, you will need to break out the glass if it still has the glass in it. Paint the frame if you want to. Some old frames are really neat looking from just being weathered. We used caulk paint on this frame, then sanded it in places to give it that weathered look. Get some chicken wire from a farm store or home improvement store and cut it to the size of your window. Take your staple gun and staple the chicken wire to the back of your window frame. You can use clothes pins or S hooks to hang your jewelry. This can also be a great idea for notes and photos if you want to use it in your kitchen.
