SALT memorial service to remember fallen officers

Members of law enforcement have a challenging job. They serve to protect our communities and weed out crime. This responsibility comes with risks. The families of 48 law enforcement personnel in Southeast Missouri know too well about this danger.

An annual Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Cape Bible Chapel. The event is presented by S.A.L.T., an acronym for Seniors and Lawmen Together. The ceremony, which includes "Last Call," is a touching reminder of the sacrifice these individuals and their families have made.

A memorial was added to Cape County Park North in 2013 to recognize the 48 officers from Southeast Missouri killed in the line of duty. Their names appear on the monument.

Friday's ceremony will include a keynote talk by Wes Blair, chief of the Cape Girardeau Police Department.

Thank you to all our local members of law enforcement. You do important work, and your bravery is to be commended.

We appreciate the work Senior and Lawmen Together does to recognize the fallen heroes, and hope you consider attending Friday's service at Cape Bible Chapel.
