'Extreme Makeover' your wardrobe with a little spot cleaning

It's that time of year again: spring cleaning your home and your wardrobe. Out with the old and in with the new. Are you ready for the new season?

You may not have the budget for a full overhaul, but by making the most of what you have and getting rid of what no longer serves you, your closet will look like you did major work. Sometimes all it takes is some good advice from a trusted source, and shopping at a local store that always delivers.

I asked two stylistas here in Cape Girardeau, Rachel McNeely and Turya Nations, to tell me about their must-haves and must-go's this spring.

Rachel McNeely, stylist and specialist at Macy's

1. Your must-have: A blue jean jacket and/or crossbody bag.

Turya Nations is a stylist and clothing and accessories designer. (Submitted)

You can pick which you use. A BJJ is a season transitional piece, so you can go ahead and start wearing the prints, patterns and silhouettes of spring and summer, and still be warm while you're patiently waiting for it (the new season) to actually get here.

Also, a CBB because the spring/summer season is the kickoff for lots of outdoor adventures and activities, and a CBB frees up your hands/arms for more fun things.

2. Your must-go: Anywhere with outdoor dining. The other "must-go" are sheer lace peek-a-boo backed shirts. They've had their run.

3. Favorite place to shop: Honestly, Macy's, but probably because I get an awesome employee discount. Otherwise, I can usually find fun one-of-a-kind pieces at Pastimes Antiques, and fun jewelry pieces at Somewhere in Time Antiques.

Turya Nations, stylist, clothing and accessories designer

1. Your must-have: A lightweight, flowy trench coat, pencil skirt and wren Minnetonka mocs.

2. Your must-go: Puffy coats and knee boots.

3. Favorite place to shop: TJ Maxx is my one stop. I can get a designer bag, dog treats for my pups and throw pillows for the house!
