Joshua Lix Receives Journeyman of the Year Award

Joshua Lix from the Fort Leonard Wood Construction Division has been selected as the US Army Corps of Engineers FY13 Engineering Journeyman of the Year!

Joshua is a Project and Office Engineer on multiple construction contracts and serves as an advocate for tomorrow's engineers. He leads the way by participating in college recruiting trips, mentoring recent college graduates; and donating much of his time and resources by partnering with nearby school districts and youth-centric organizations to promote the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) initiative.

The STEM initiative, dubbed "Tomorrow's Engineers", is one of USACE goals to ensure we have a pipeline of talent to prepare us for tomorrow. As part of this team, Joshua has conducted science and mathematics experiments at the local community fair and partnered with the Pulaski County 4-H Club in conducting engineering and science activities such as polymers, aerodynamics, and bridge building at the Missouri State Fair. They've conducted engineering briefings on the importance of "Engineering in our Country" to freshman students and teachers, helped with regional science project competitions, and introduced hundreds of students to the science of Missouri aquatic ecosystems at the Bray County Conservation site. The teams' ideas and suggestions on a grant proposal helped lead them to receiving a 2.5 million dollar grant. Joshua, as a founding member of the Tomorrow's Engineers team, is helping build tomorrow's engineers today.

Joshua is volunteer leader for the Boy Scouts of America, an Eagle Scout, and an OA Vigil Honor recipient. He has instructed classes in Engineering for the STEM University in January and for the Merit Badge University in February, both held on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau.

Joshua does his part to develop a diverse world-class workforce with a reputation for technical and leadership excellence. He is part of the Defense Acquisition Workforce Improvement Act feeder group and is actively pursuing certification. He is rapidly becoming one of the indispensable subject matter experts in project scheduling and contract administration. Joshua has participated in the intern rotation program and shares his knowledge and expertise with an ever-increasing circle of contacts throughout the district and beyond. He is doing much to create an exciting and challenging career experience that enables learning, recognizes excellence, and endeavors to emulate it in all aspects of his life.

Joshua stands out as one who is paying it forward early in his career.

Joshua is the son of Saundra & Eric Flanagan of Millersville, and Chris Lix of Cape Girardeau. Joshua is a 2005 graduate of Woodland High School and 2009 graduate of the Missouri Institute of Science and Technology (MS&T -Rolla).
