Play ball: SEMO baseball and softball off to good starts

Picture it: It's 70 degrees with sunshine and a light breeze blowing. The aroma of ballpark food is in the air. Fans flock to Cherry Hill and the first base side at Capaha Field.

This, eventually, will be the scene for Redhawks baseball in Cape Girardeau.

The Southeast Missouri State University baseball team was supposed to have its first home game of the year this afternoon. It was announced Monday that the game will be moved to Little Rock, Ark.

The schedule now points to 3 p.m. Wednesday for the first home game at Capaha Field.

The Redhawks are coming off a successful opening weekend at Oral Roberts University. The team won its first two games before losing the finale on Sunday.

The Southeast baseball program has enjoyed success over the years. The atmosphere at Capaha Field is fantastic, with fans cheering and enjoying a relaxing day at the ballpark.

The team will play at home this weekend with games at 3 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.

The Redhawks softball team has a 3-2 record after playing in Monroe, La., over the weekend.

Their first home game is scheduled for noon March 1 at the Southeast Sports Complex, located at the corner of Sprigg and Bertling streets.

We wish both teams all the best this season. Consider heading out to the ballparks for great competition this spring.
