Be mindful of fire safety this winter

The outdoor smell of fireplaces burning is common these days. Winter's chill leads more people to add a log to the fire, using fireplaces to heat homes. This makes fireplace safety, and other fire prevention tips, all the more important.

Reporter Emily Priddy recently wrote a story that included tips from area professionals. These included:

* Keep Christmas trees watered.

* Inspect Christmas lights every year to insure they are not loose or worn.

* Cheap extension chords and overused power outlets can present issues. Power strips are a better alternative for several strands of lights.

* LED lights can reduce chances of electrical fires.

* Have fireplaces or chimneys inspected each year.

* Properly dispose of ashes. According to one source, this can be done by using a metal container and cooling with water.

* Be leery of older space heaters. The more modern versions can be safer.

* Inspect electric blankets.

* Don't use a stove or barbecue grill for home heat. If you use kerosene heaters or electric generators, these should be installed and used properly. As an example, don't use a generator in enclosed areas and do not add fuel while it's running.
