Toybox, Christmas for the Elderly support needed

Editor's note: The following editorial has been edited to correct an item -- house shoes -- that is a good gift for the elderly.

As we all cross gifts off our lists this Christmas season, we'd like to offer another reminder about our Toybox and Christmas for the Elderly programs.

The Toybox program delivers toys to children in Cape Girardeau who wouldn't otherwise receive presents. Toys may be dropped off at dozens of locations, including the Southeast Missourian, until Dec. 19.

The Christmas for the Elderly program generally consists of more practical items that are delivered to seniors in need.

Nearly every day during the Christmas season, Tracy Haggerty writes a blog about specific needs for children and elderly. They are published in the Southeast Missourian as well.

Generally, good gifts for children include blocks, puzzles, Legos, dolls, trucks, action figures, Nerf toys, athletic equipment, makeup kits and skateboards. Good gifts for the elderly include gift cards for grocery or pharmacy, toilet paper, tissues, cleanings supplies, toiletries, pajamas and robes; socks and undergarments; house shoes and coats.

Please consider adding a present or two to the Toybox and Elderly programs this year. It means a lot to the recipients who may receive no gifts otherwise.

A special thanks to the Jaycees who organize the Toybox event every year.
