Hunting's economic effects

I recently read a great story in your paper about deer season (Deer season means big bucks, Nov. 17). I want to thank you for publishing a story about the impact that hunting has on your local businesses. As you know, hunting is big deal, not only in Southeast Missouri, but across our state.

Hunting has a huge impact on Missouri's economy. In fact, hunters support more than 18,000 jobs in Missouri and generate over $540 million in salaries and wages. From sporting goods stores to hotels, these jobs run the entire spectrum of Missouri's economy. When all is said and done, hunting's impact on Missouri's economy is $1.6 billion!

I'm glad to be living in state that supports a sport that is such a strong player in our economy. Again, I want to thank you for sharing the story on how businesses in Southeast Missouri benefit from hunting. It's a great story that we're excited to share throughout Missouri.
