Trick-or-treat safety

Depending on weather conditions this evening, there could be a number of children in costume knocking on doors.

While for many the night is about collecting candy, it's important to know a few basic safety tips before heading out the door.

Southeast Missourian reporter Emily Priddy wrote a front-page story for Wednesday's edition that included several tips from local law enforcement. These include:

* Supervise your children.

* Trick-or-treat in familiar neighborhoods.

* Only go to homes with lights on and avoid poorly lit areas.

* Pay attention to surroundings and traffic.

* Bring a flashlight.

* Wear light-colored clothing.

* Trust your instincts if you think something is wrong.

* Slow down while driving.

* Be alert to children, including those who might cross a street without watching for traffic.

There are area churches that host fun and family-oriented events like trunk-or-treat. These are good places to consider.
