Cape BBQ Fest

Few parties would be better without a griller. Someone who has mastered the art of searing meat and balancing it with a savory rub. This weekend there will be many at Arena Park in Cape Girardeau hoping to come away with the top prize at the Cape BBQ Fest.

This is the 21st annual event of its kind sponsored by the Cape Girardeau Jaycees. Robbie Guard, event chairman, told the Southeast Missourian this week that 57 teams have registered for the competition, sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society. Teams wishing to participate still have time to register. Check in begins at 9 a.m. today. Teams will perform from 7 to 8 p.m.

Food will be sold by the Jaycees from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. today outside of the Arena Building. Drinks will be sold by Port Cape Girardeau from 5 to 11 p.m., and the Mike Renick Band is scheduled to perform beginning at 8 p.m.

The competition kicks in to high gear Saturday morning, and awards will be given out at 3 p.m. The champion will be eligible to participate in the state championships later this fall in Kansas City.

The Cape BBQ Fest has been a popular event. More than 2,000 people came out last year, and organizers are expecting a strong turnout this weekend.

If you enjoy good barbecue or want to watch some talented individuals prepare various meats, consider heading out to the Arena.
