Welcome back

Many Southeast Missouri State University students are returning to town this week. The fall semester kicks off Monday.

Freshmen will begin moving in Thursday. According to the university's news bureau, there are about 1,200 first-year students joining the university.

The move-in period draws many volunteers to help parents and students, and the university has several events to celebrate the start of a new school year.

One of the highlights is the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce Welcome Back Picnic. From 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday in the Show Me Center, students will be treated to food, music and giveaways.

The chamber is encouraging businesses to put welcome-back messages on their marquees.

Southeast Missouri State University students play an important role in the economic engine of Cape Girardeau and the surrounding communities.

Past studies have indicated that 100 students provide about a $1 million economic boost. Looking at a university with enrollment topping 12,000, the total impact is significant.

The university's employees also add value to this community. From jobs to learning opportunities to economic development and quality of life amenities, Southeast is a key partner.

For businesses, the talent pool is important. To help connect businesses with prospective employees, the university launched an online recruitment tool called REDConnect.

We extend our best wishes to all the students, professors and staff at Southeast. The fall semester is an exciting time of year, and especially so for first-year students. We encourage everyone who calls this area home to make these students feel welcome.
