Losing weight

We hope you read the feature on Tuesday's Health page about former Jackson resident Bill Moore and his inspirational weight loss story.

Moore worked as a traveling salesman. The nights in hotels and food-on-the-go lifestyle left him at more than 300 pounds. To make matters worse, he was diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis.

Eventually doing simple tasks became an ordeal. This led him to make a decision for the sake of his health. More than 100 pounds later, Moore is a testimony to the benefits of eating healthier and exercising.

Summer is one time of year we often think about physical fitness. There have been local competitions in past years to see which group could exercise the most. TV shows like "The Biggest Loser" highlight drastic situations where people lose significant amounts of weight.

Locally there are outdoor trails and recreational facilities to use for exercise. Fitness centers also are good places to start, and there are several weight-loss programs promoted by various entities.

Whether you're facing a situation like Moore or simply want to look for ways to be healthier, we encourage you to consider what steps to take. For some it's a minor dietary adjustment. For others it's renewing a commitment to exercise and limiting unhealthy foods. As you consider the options, it's important to consult with your health care professional.
