State champions

It's a Hollywood script no one would believe. Season after season, coming close but never winning the big game -- until the coach's very last game. Last month Oran baseball became state champions.

The Eagles defeated the Santa Fe Chiefs on May 29 in the Class 1 championship. The final score was 8-4.

Over the years Oran baseball has seen much success. The program has 12 trips to the final four, with 10 under coach Mitch Wood.

While just making the state tournament is a significant accomplishment, for the players, coaches, parents and fans it's always tough to go home without coming out on top.

But thanks to a strong team effort, the Eagles can now call themselves state champs.

What makes this win all the more special is this was Mitch Wood's last game as head coach of the team. Like Tony La Russa and the 2011 St. Louis Cardinals, Wood leaves on a high note. What a story!

We offer our congratulations to Wood on an impressive tenure as coach and to the team on an exceptional season.
