Spelling bee

Remember the days of spelling tests? There were flash cards and pop quizzes, and your parents or siblings had their own quizzing methods. While today's tools like auto correct and spell check are useful, the art of spelling shouldn't be overlooked.

One local student soon will compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.

Seventh-grader Jade Ray Samanta, who attends Trinity Lutheran School in Cape Girardeau, won the March 9 regional spelling bee in Poplar Bluff, Mo. Though he enjoys many activities, spelling has captured much of Samanta's time.

A Southeast Missourian story from earlier this month reported that Samanta spent eight weeks preparing for the regional competition. In addition to his other activities and schoolwork, he studied spelling for about three hours daily.

"I just enjoy the sense of competition and it's helping me to learn more," Samanta said. "In addition to the spelling, I also learn the definition and the origin of the word."

The Scripps National Spelling Bee has captured the attention of a broad audience. Covered by ESPN, the spelling protégés will have a national audience. This year's competition will start Sunday and continue through May 31.
