Cape police investigating Friday morning brawl

Sunday, May 19, 2013

The Cape Girardeau Police Department is investigating a brawl that occurred early Friday morning at the Boardman Pavillion at the intersection of Independence and South Main streets.

According to Darin Hickey, department spokesman, the fighting started at the pavilion at about 1:30 a.m. There were anywhere from 30 to 40 people at the scene, and the people believed responsible for beginning the fighting fled when officers arrived. Three victims of the brawl came forward to police, including a man who apparently tried to stop the fighting and was punched and beaten with a baseball bat. The man is receiving treatment at a hospital, Hickey said.

Hickey said the names of people involved in the fighting aren't being released at this time, and no arrests have been made. The police department is interviewing witnesses who observed the brawl, and currently there is no explanation for what caused it, Hickey said.

Anyone with any information about the fighting is urged to contact the police department at 335-6621 or the CrimeStoppers hotline at 339-6312.

The bars downtown this is becoming a every night event. Businesses being vandalized, car windows being broke out and fights by these drunks coming from the bars. There needs to be Police presents at all times in the downtown area during the evening hours especially during the spring, summer and fall on the beat not in the car on the beat.

Where were the police? It is obvious city ordinance was being violated before the fight.

Not sure that any of these would apply in this case, ortega. There is nothing in the article to indicate that a group of people "agreed...to violate a criminal law." Did they cause alarm to others by fighting? Were they on private property?

I`m not convinced that those other laws mentioned by Ortega were broken, but how about mob-action. That's what it sounds like to me.

Dang! It's getting to the point that a few people can't get together and have a few too many and have a rumble without everybody getting their panties in a wad.

If there aren't enough police in town, then perhaps those that give license to serve alcohol should stop giving licenses out. It's clear this town can't provide the support and infrastructure to support so many bars.
