Scholar Bowl

Like any competition, there's much work that goes into Scholar Bowl. No, there may not be thousands of fans in the grandstand. But for the students competing, it's an exciting time of year.

A story in the March 14 Southeast Missourian highlighted the efforts of area Scholar Bowl teams. The high school regular season is winding down and districts are a few weeks away. Local schools planning to compete at districts include: Cape Girardeau Central High School, Notre Dame Regional High School, Leopold, Saxony Lutheran and Bell City. Scott City is tentatively scheduled to participate as well.

While the individual competitions and tournaments are a key component to the season, there's a good deal of preparation behind the efforts. In competitions, students are asked questions by a moderator and challenged to be the first to buzz in with the correct answer. This type of information recall requires a solid background in a variety of subjects and the ability to process information quickly. Records from several area teams indicate there are many students locally who excel at this.

We wish all the students and teams well in the district competitions and beyond.
