Great seasons

An incredible season just got better for Georgetown's Otto Porter. On Tuesday, the former standout for Scott County Central was unanimously selected the Big East Conference's Player of the Year.

In his sophomore year, Porter was one of the top Division I college basketball players in the country. His numbers for rebounding, steals and 3-point shooting were among the best in the top-tier conference. With an overall record of 24-5, the Hoyas appear poised to do well in the NCAA tournament.

Of course there will continue to be talk of Porter's future -- whether he will leave school early for the NBA. But a decision about whether to play in the NBA can wait. For now, Porter will continue to dazzle fans across the country.

The Scott County Central boys' basketball program has seen tremendous success in recent years and this year's squad was bidding for yet another state title. Unfortunately, the team fell short earlier this month in a 65-55 loss to Eminence in a Class 1 state quarterfinal. Nevertheless, the Braves had another wonderful season and should be proud of their success.

The Oran boys' basketball team just wrapped up a memorable run. The Eagles made it to the final four for only the second time in school history.

After losing to Salisbury in the semifinals, the team played a hard-fought game against Iberia but lost 65-63. Still, congratulations to Oran for a wonderful effort and great season.

Other local basketball teams that had extended playoff runs include the Jackson boys [losing in Class 5 quarterfinals], Jackson girls [losing in sectionals] and Saxony Lutheran girls [losing in sectionals].
