Leading by seven entering the final eight minutes, Scott City fell victim to a number of turnovers that propelled the Scott County Central Braves to a 60-56 overtime win Tuesday at Scott County Central High School.
"Things just kind of snowballed in the wrong direction," Scott City head coach Mark Dannenmueller said. "We turned it over once, and then once became twice, and then three and four. We just weren't mentally tough enough I guess. Bottom line, we're just not making smart enough plays. We're playing hard as a team, but we're not playing smart all the time and that's what hurting us."
The Braves, trailing 44-37 after three quarters, forced seven turnovers in the fourth behind a bruising defensive effort. Scott City struggled getting the ball past halfcourt on many occasions.
"That's about the third game in a row now where we've just fallen apart in the fourth quarter," Dannenmueller said."
The Rams (13-12) still gathered themselves enough to force overtime.
Ryan Brock hit two free throws with 2.2 seconds to tie the game at 52-all.
The Braves (12-12) were able to heave a last second attempt that fell to the wayside forcing overtime.
Scott Central began the extra period with a basket by Matt Blissett. A jumper from Scott City's Jonathan McFall tied the game again.
Once more, Ryan Fortner tied the game at 56-56 after a bucket by Jaylen Porter.
Scott Central's eventual game-winner came at the hands of Tyler Masters underneath the basket.
Larandis Banks, who led the Braves with 15 points, sealed the win with a layup.
"It's a hug win," Scott Central head coach Frank Staple said. "This is a big week for us, and we knew it would be tough tonight.
