Speak Out 2/4/13

Monday, February 4, 2013

Feed a family

This is regarding the food banks. I was the impoverished mother of a son raising him by myself. He got free lunches and he was ashamed. He said, "Mom, I'm not going to let everyone know I'm poor." You should consider these children family. Make a better effort than donating. Take a night a week and feed a family, it would be like Christmas.

Honest people

I would like to give an acknowledgment to Shalia V. and the evening staff at Fazoli's for finding my iPhone that I had left there, for keeping it safe, tracking me down and letting me know it was found. Always nice to see that honesty in folks these days.

Vanishing freedom

They talk about America, the land of the free. By the time Obama is done with his next four years, we won't have any freedom. Read the books and you'll know the freedoms that will be taken away a little at a time. Beware.

Not dictator

I was under the impression we hired Obama as a president not a dictator. All I hear is if we don't do things the way he wants to, he'll use the executive privilege. He doesn't take into account the House and Senate, and he just does what he wants. I think we have a problem that one person is trying to tell everyone what to do.

For those of you who support justice and criminals paying for their crimes, please read, "Man gets probation in burglary spree" and "Cape man gets probation in attack." You may want to contact Judge Lewis and the prosecuting attorney's office and ask why these criminals are not brought to justice. And liberals wonder why we feel the need to arm ourselves to protect our homes and families.

Corps leaves work

I don't care what the PR said for the Corps of Engineers. They blew up over 2 miles of levee in the spring of 2011. They promised to fix everything they damaged. They have not rebuilt the levee to its previous height, have not fixed the county road that was on top of the levee or reseeded the side with grass. They have not fixed the bridge they washed away, they have not connected the county roads that were connected, they have not gotten the job done. It's 2013, and they haven't gotten the job done. They got some good PR, but they haven't gotten the job done.

Guns and abortion

If Mr. Obama is so concerned about the children, why doesn't he do something about the 4,400 a day murdered by abortion?

Guns and plows

I have been told that Thomas Jefferson said, "Those who hammer their guns into plowshares, will plow for those who do not."

I can't believe the mayor is so worried about the federal building when at the beginning of Broadway are the Esquire and Broadway theaters that are ugly and need to be torn down.

Priebus re-elected

It's shocking to me that Reince Priebus was re-elected to head the Republican National Committee. What is even more mind blowing is that Priebus ran unopposed.

Feed a family: Good idea, Christmas should be every day.

Guns and plows: Thomas should have added the following: "Those who hammer their guns into plowshares, will plow for those who do not" for fear of being shot by those who didn't.

Theaters: True, why don't someone remake the Esquire into a music hall like they did to the Rodgers theater in Poplar Bluff.

Where were you when the lights went out at the Super Bowl?

Who cares about the lights at the stupidbowl? Bunch of overgrown & overpaid brats playing a silly game that doesn't really matter in the greater scheme of things...with a ton of overpriced commercials scattered throughout. I'd be willing to bet the greedy network had something to do with it...I'm sure they snuck in a few extra $4,000,000/30 second advertisers because of it. Like they say...follow the money.

I watch Hee Haw on Sunday nights...much more entertaining.

It seems the favorite pass time of the NRA is misquoting Thomas Jefferson. I have a project for you NRA "historians" There is a book out there called simply, "Jefferson" Now I realize it is a challenge, because it is over 5 pages. Closer to 600 actually. In it is just about everything the man ever said, in his own words. Spare us your misquotes, and those of Rush Limbaugh, and go read the sucker.

Semo - I decided to write in verse only

due to some people who appear to be lonely

I found that I enjoy it so much

I do it for breakfast, supper, and lunch!

Thanks for the John Lennon Utube -to shine on

If it was meant as a threat - that's just wrong!

I like the Monkeys better than most

So I will consider it a blest Roast!

But being knocked off my feet and you being a fool

Is not something I normally consider to be cool!

Probably an IBEW union guy on break when the lights went out. I watch one pro football game a year, the Super Bowl, cause I like beer, chili and chicken wings.

If you want real sport watch rugby or Australian Rules Football. These guys wear shorty-shorts,no pads and only have a little leather helmet on sometimes cause their ears were torn off in the last game. I'd like to see these overpaid NFL guys try either one.

From yesterday...

Yes Mr. Wheels, I do own things that I don't really need. But none of which were created to kill rapidly.

-- Posted by Reasoning on Mon, Feb 4, 2013, at 1:12 PM

A gun is like a parachute. If you need one and don't own one you'll probably never need another one

-- Posted by dab1969 on Mon, Feb 4, 2013, at 1:24 PM

Not quite Dissident. I don't mind firearms and I certainly don't mind law abiding citizens owning one. What I do not agree with are the assault type weapons which were designed for military use and not for hunting or home protection.

Like someone said, maybe SEMO 471, dead is dead.

-- Posted by Reasoning on Mon, Feb 4, 2013, at 3:09 PM

The "assualt type" weapons that many wish to be banned are not designed for military use and are ever increasingly being used for hunting.

Just because they "look" like military style weapons does not make them so.

'Thomas Jefferson described our inalienable rights as life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness; the rights with which we are endowed for the protection of which we have instituted governments. I do not think the composition of that foundational phrase was an accident. I do not think the order of those important words was haphazard or casual. The liberty of any person to own a military-style assault weapon and a high-capacity magazine and keep them in their home is second to the right of my son to his life, his life, to the right to live of all of those children, and those teachers. To the right to the lives of your children, of you, of all of us, all of our lives, it is second. Let's honor the founding documents and get our priorities straight." David Wheeler, father of 6 year old Ben Wheeler, Sandy Hook victim.

Assault rifles are primary offensive weapons of modern troops. Today's AR (Assault Rifles) usually have calibers ranging from 5.45mm to 7.62mm, magazine capacity of 20-30 or more rounds, selective full auto and single shot modes of fire, plus, in some models, 2 or 3 round burst mode. Effective range of fire is some 600 meters or so; effective rate of fire - up to 400-500 rounds per minute in full auto mode. Many assault rifles shown here are, in fact, parts of whole families of assault firearms (from short carbines to light machineguns - Steyr AUG is a good example). Almost all AR's may be equipped with bayonet, optical or Night Vision scope/sight and, some of them, with underbarrel grenade launcher or rifle grenade launcher (rifle grenades usually are put on the barrel and fired with a blank cartridge). Todays trends in AR design are wide usage of hardened plastics and lightweight alloys and built-in holographic (collimator) or optical scopes with magnitfication of 1X to 4-6X (usually 1X or 1.5-3X).

My wife's house gun has a HALO scope on it. Is it not fair to the intruder she is able to look around a corner in the dark and blow his head off? I take that back. First round is beanbags, second is bird shot, then come the 6 pitbulls.

Actually Dissident, fastfood and cigarettes were not created to kill. You may try to connect them, but a french fry in your hand is not going to hurt my children. Yes, it may make you obese, but that is like saying your gun may cause your death but no one elses.

Violence is a problem, gangs are problems, and yes they would still have murder without guns. But not at the rate we have now.

Why does NRA promote gun ownership? Why not get rid of the problem in the wrong hands?? Why not at least try to keep the guns out of the wrong hands!

-- Posted by Reasoning on Mon, Feb 4, 2013, at 6:09 PM

So..the logical conclusion is to get hand guns out of the wrong hands!

Fast and Furious. I am not qualified to comment on this, but you seem fixated by it. All I know is that it was botched attempt at catching drug cartels which involved selling weapons illegally. Did they shoot children too?

Yes Diss, take the guns away from mentally ill. Do you have a problem with this?

-- Posted by Reasoning on Mon, Feb 4, 2013, at 6:36 PM

I cannot prove that regulating assault weapons will prevent deaths, but I am willing to take that chance.

-- Posted by Reasoning on Mon, Feb 4, 2013, at 6:37 PM

Dissident & Reasoning: IMO the only way to keep the insane from purchasing guns is to have the current background check by the gun dealer and if passed the person then is given a written test form which is then faxed into a physiological system to determine if that person can buy a gun. A person could appeal the ruling and a method would have to be set up to do so. This doesn't interfere with the doctor/patient confidentiality. The next problem is how to keep the insane from getting hold of a gun by other means. IMO we need a better mental health system that does not turn back into the public people who might do harm to the public, this might infringe on some of their rights but better them than the innocent victims. Parents and love ones need to take the welfare of the public over the protection of their family members.

-- Posted by semo471 on Mon, Feb 4, 2013, at 7:57 PM

Are criminals going to have to subject themselves to a background check before they are allowed to steal a gun?

Are the unlicensed black market dealers who sell these stolen guns to other criminals on the street going to have to call in a background check before they complete the sale?

Even if the law said they were supposed to, does ANYONE think they would comply?

Then why should the law-abiding have to endure any additional background checks when WE buy a gun legally?

Criminals don't obey the laws we already have. Why on Earth would anyone expect them to obey any NEW "gun control" laws?

Why not simply ENFORCE the laws that are ALREADY on the books? Straw purchases are ALREADY illegal. Felons are ALREADY prohibited from possessing a gun. Rape, assault, robbery, murder....all are ALREADY against the law! We don't NEED any new laws.

"Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." - Benjamin Franklin, 1755
