Carrol Adam Schaefer, 84, of Cape Girardeau passed away Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2012, at Southeast Hospital.
He was born March 1, 1928, in Wolf Lake, Ill., to Raymond and Lena Market Schaefer. He and Aileen Voges were married Aug. 8, 1953, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cape Girardeau, where their membership remains.
Carrol was a 1947 graduate of Wolf Lake High School, and thereafter farmed in Illinois.
He entered the U.S. Navy on Sept. 25, 1950. He served on the USS Yarnell during the Korean conflict, and was honorably discharged Jan. 4, 1952.
Upon returning to Cape Girardeau, he worked three years at the former American White Cross. He then embarked on a 33-year career with Cape Girardeau Fire Department. He served seven years as a fireman and 26 years as a mechanic, retiring in 1991.
Loving survivors include his wife of 59 years, Aileen of Cape Girardeau; a daughter, Donna Rae (Robert) James of Cape Girardeau; a granddaughter, Terra Dawn (Roger) Aufdenberg and their children, Craig Adam and Emily Dawn Aufdenberg, all of Jackson; two brothers, Gene (Barbara) Schaefer of Dongola, Ill., Jim Schaefer of Jonesboro, Ill.; and a sister, Ellen Sergeant of Lebo, Kan.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Cyril Schaefer; and an infant sister, Ramona Schaefer.
Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today at McCombs Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Douglas Breite officiating. Interment will be in Cape County Memorial Park, with full military honors.
Memorials may take the form of contributions to Trinity Lutheran Church or Trinity Lutheran School, both in Cape Girardeau, or a charity of one's choice.
