Get a jump-start on holiday shopping at four local arts and crafts shows

Black Friday is traditionally thought of as the start of the Christmas shopping season, but savvy shoppers have a chance to cross a lot of gifts off their list the weekend before Thanksgiving.

On Nov. 17 and 18, Cape Girardeau will be home to arts and craft fairs featuring hundreds of vendors, offering everything from handmade jewelry to home goods and homemade jellies.

Sheryl Winschel, owner of the Golden Needle, organizes one of those craft fairs, and she says the earlier you start shopping, the better. "The first (person) in the door sees the best pieces," she says.

And don't think you can hang around and snag the best deals on Sunday night. "Crafters have no need to lower prices," Winschel says. "Vendors, when they do some things, lower prices because they don't want to pack it up and take it home. Crafters don't have to discount, because it's going to keep. They can use it for the next show."

For the first time, the show will be held at Notre Dame instead of the Bavarian Halle. "Obviously, we wanted to get closer to Cape," Buehrle says. "We took the show over about five years ago. Since we have the extra room with our multipurpose building, we decided to bring it here and have our kids more involved in it and our parents more involved in it."
