High school roundup: ND volleyball team falls in title match at Festus

The Notre Dame volleyball team suffered only its second loss of the season as it dropped a battle of state-ranked Class 3 squads in the championship game of the Festus Invitational on Saturday.

Lutheran South, which took third place in the Class 3 state tournament last season and is currently seventh in the state rankings, defeated the No. 2 Bulldogs 25-17, 25-23.

"I think we were a little intimidated watching [Lutheran South]," Notre Dame coach Tara Stroup said. "We knew that they had went to state last year. ... They run a really quick offense, and they're a big team."

Senior middle blocker Miranda Fowler led Notre Dame (27-2-1) with nine kills, while senior middle blocker Myriah Benard added eight kills. Senior outside hitter Kelsey Luster added four kills. Taylor Ward shelled out 10 assists, and Karsen Powers tallied 11 digs.

The Bulldogs posted a 6-0 record in pool play with straight-set wins over host Festus 25-14, 25-21, Seckman 25-16, 25-19, and Farmington 25-12, 25-23.

The Bulldogs downed De Soto 25-14, 25-15 in the first round of the bracket tournament.

Fowler led Notre Dame with nine kills, while Bernard had eight kills in the match. Setter Taylor Ward dished out 15 assists, and libero Karsen Powers recorded nine digs.

VOLLEYBALL

Perryville Invitational

Class 1 powerhouse Valle Catholic (27-0) defeated host Perryville 25-23, 25-23 to win the gold bracket and remain undefeated.

The Pirates avenged a regular season loss to St. Pius, the defending Class 2 state champions, in a three-set thriller in the semifinals. The Pirates dropped the first set 14-25 but bounced back to pull out a 26-24, 25-23 victory.

Perryville defeated Jackson 25-18, 25-15 in the first round.

Jackson's Melinna Craft had eight kills, 18 digs and five aces on the day, while Hailey Mouser had nine kills and two blocks. Alexa Kelpe dished out 20 assists, while McKenzie Scott had 18 assists and 12 digs. Chelsea Fowler added 12 kills and seven aces for Jackson (12-16-2).

Saxony Lutheran beat Bloomfield 25-15, 25-22 in the championship match of the silver bracket.

Raegan Wieser led the Crusaders with nine kills. Natalie Mueller added four kills, and Kirsti Pohlman had 15 assists, five aces and six digs in the win.

Saxony downed Sikeston 25-23, 25-17 in the semifinals. Jordan Hoff led the way with six kills and eight digs. Pohlman dished out 11 assists.

The Crusaders defeated Fredericktown 25-22, 25-12 in the first round. Hoff had six kills, while Polhman had four kills, 10 assists and four digs.

Carson Bruenderman and Stephen Brennan had the assists for Notre Dame (14-5).

Goalkeeper Thomas Himmelberg recorded two saves.

GIRLS TENNIS

Class 2 sectional

The Jackson netters fell to host Lafayette (Wildwood) 5-0 in the Class 2 sectional match in suburban St. Louis. The Indians ended their season at 17-2.

Lafayette went on to lose in the quarterfinals to St. Joseph's Academy of St. Louis 5-0.

Lindbergh Invitational

Notre Dame's Dustin Parsons broke a school record in the 100 butterfly at the Lindbergh Invitational swimming and diving meet.

Parsons touched the wall in 54.25 seconds to finish second in the event.

The Bulldogs placed eighth, one spot ahead of Jackson, in the team standings.

The Indians' Kristian Troxel finished third in the 200 freestyle (1:49.77) and sixth in the 100 butterfly (55.86) in state-qualifying times. Joey Janisse also placed third in the 200 individual medley (2:10.38) and earned a state-qualifying time to place third in the 100 backstroke (57.18).

Notre Dame's Breanna Conklin finished fourth and was the top local finisher among the girls. Notre Dame's Michael Nelson placed 11th and was the top local finisher among the boys.
