Day finishes normally despite power outage at Cape Central High School

Thursday, September 27, 2012

Cape Girardeau Central High School was without electricity Wednesday afternoon but classes remained in session through the day. Neil Glass, the Cape Girardeau School District director of administrative services, said a fire in the main power feed unit on the ground near the north end of the high school campus was believed to be the cause for the outage. Glass said the feed may have been struck by lightning recently but did not short out until Wednesday. The Cape Girardeau Fire Department and crews from Ameren Missouri responded quickly, according to Glass, and repair of the outage was estimated to take around four hours. Superintendent Jim Welker said Wednesday afternoon the school had running water but did not have phone service. Officials said they were confident power would be fully restored in time for the start of classes today.
