Speak Out 8/9/12

Thursday, August 9, 2012

Thank you

I know this had to be a wonderful Christian person to do the good deed that he did for me not knowing me. I had lost my credit card and I searched every place; could not find it. I happened to think about calling Merchant Gas Station at the Jackson Walmart and lo and behold they said someone brought my card in. So thank you, thank you, thank you.

Blaming parents

I am in my late 50s. As far back as I can remember, we have had war movies, cowboys and Indians, saloon fights and the Three Stooges on TV and at the movie theaters. I have seen parents hitting their children with belts and switches. Now think about this the next time you blame parents for taking their children to see the Batman movie. Mr. Holmes is a premeditated murderer, and he is to blame for his actions, not innocent people.

Mail service

What has happened to the Scott City post office? I used to get my mail by 3 p.m., and now I am getting if after 5 p.m. I went over to the building and it looks like they are going out of business. What is going on? We used to get such great mail service from them.

Sowell column

If Thomas Sowell wants to talk about news vs. propaganda, he should mention Fox News above all else. The half-truths, distorted comments of those they disagree with and outright lies, make it the Fox Opinion or Fox Propaganda Network, not news.

Broadway money

You know, it sure is nice how they're trying to improve the appearance of Broadway, but just maybe that amount of money should have been allotted to increase the personnel in both the Cape Girardeau Police Department and the local sheriff's department because when that new casino opens, the need for more law enforcement officers will outweigh the need for a nicer looking Broadway.

Making noise

I would like to ask all politicians why they don't have the honesty within themselves when somebody asks them a question that they don't know the answer to, just to say: "I don't know"? That would be a lot better than trying to do a whole lot of talk that doesn't say anything and the person listening knows when they get through that they don't know what they're talking about. But they won't say "I don't know." That would show us that there is some honesty in that person where if they just want to talk, talk, talk, that tells us that they don't really care what they say, just as long as they're making noise.

Scott City post office is no longer operating the same way. All of our mail carriers have to drive to Cape to sort mail and back to Scott City to deliver it.I use to get mail by 1:30 now it is 5:00 or later.

The change is difficult for all of us involved just think about the carriers. Sad!

Many thanks to the kind man in Poplar Bluff who went out of his way and was very helpful to two lost women from Cape Girardeau. Your kindness is very much appreciated.

Blaming parents: Once kids leave their parents house, they are on there own....can't blame the parents for their actions.

Mail service: Call the postmaster and ask him wants going on with your service.

Broadway money: Cape needed a remake, the extra police will come later when the city starts raking in the money from the casino (j/k).

Making noise: They all do it, it's call taking points. They talk about what they want to and not answer the questions asked.

Now here is something worth reading: http://magazine.foxnews.com/food-wellnes...

Broadway money: Statistically there is no increase in crime once the casino opens. Crime usually drops during the first year due to the additional security a casino brings and the economic impact of hiring low skilled workers who might otherwise be unemployed and drawn to illicit ways of earning a living.

Any major increase in crime usually happens 4-5 years AFTER the casino opens. You have to wait for the initial popularity to wear off, then the tax revenues start to decline and the casino starts to cut back on employment(particular employment of security guards and other employees that don't directly contribute to revenues). Plus you must give time for a small percentage of the population to develop gambling habits and burn through their funding sources.

So any additional law enforcement now would be wasted. We could probably even cut back by an officer or two once the casino opens. It won't be until 2016 or 2017 that we might need the additional law enforcement resources. Here is a solid study demonstrating the initial drop in crime rates along with the later lagging increases http://www.terry.uga.edu/~mustard/casino...
