Cape police: No extra officers at movie theater

Friday, July 20, 2012

Cape Girardeau police will not be assigning extra officers to a local movie theater following this morning's shooting during a screening of "The Dark Knight Rises" in Aurora, Colo.

In response to an emailed question, Cape Girardeau Police Department spokesman Darin Hickey said the department will not be assigning extra officers to the Cape West 14 Cine, where the movie is showing, "but our officers are informed on the situation in Colorado and our officers are very well trained to handle any situation that could arise. Our officers will keep a watch for suspicious activity and any other situations."

The Associated Press reported today that Wehrenberg theaters, the parent chain of Cape West 14 Cine, will not be increasing security in their theaters because the company feels security measures already in place are adequate.

The death toll from the shooting at a midnight showing of the new movie in Colorado stood at 12 early Friday afternoon.
