Investigation continues into New Madrid County inmate assault death

NEW MADRID, Mo. -- The investigation is continuing into the death of an inmate at the New Madrid County Jail.

John Wayne Reynolds Jr., 49, died around 8 p.m. Tuesday after he was assaulted by other inmates at the jail, according to New Madrid County Sheriff Terry Stevens.

Stevens said he was notified of the death at 8:15 p.m.

According to the sheriff, the Missouri State Highway Patrol was called in to assist in the investigation of the death.

Because of the continuing investigation, Stevens declined to go into details about the incident. He did indicate he expected charges to be filed soon in the incident.
