Sun and song, what a perfect combination

Friday, June 8, 2012

Almost everyone loves summer, and for good reason. Schools are out, vacation plans are realized and the weather is perfect for camping or hitting up a swimming hole.

It's also a great time for relaxing with your summer soundtrack. These are the songs that instantly make one think of past summers with late night bonfires, old relationships or spending the day in the park. And while it has definitely been very warm the past few weeks, the official start of summer is only now upon us (June 20, to be exact).

With that in mind, I hit downtown Cape Girardeau last weekend to find out what everyone's listening to at the barbecues and by the pools the next few months (with some surprising results). Be sure to tell me what tune makes you reminisce about summer by email (jsamons@semissourian.com), Facebook (facebook.com/seliveevents) or Twitter (@selive).

Chris Wheaton

"Summer doesn't start until I blare ‘Dani California' by the Red Hot Chili Peppers as I drive down the highway. It just gives me that summer, good-time feeling."

Kari Hoste

"If I had one summer song request, it would be Chicago's ‘Saturday in the Park.' You can close your eyes and just visualize summer and everyone outside enjoying themselves. It even mentions July 4."

Zac Loe

"I have to go with ‘Deadweight' by Beck. The video for it perfectly encapsulates how it feels to have to go to work instead of the beach. It even sounds like a cool type of island music.

Cathy Eisenberg

"I know it's the lame choice, but I unabashedly endorse ‘Summertime' by DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince. That song brings me into summer, even if I hear it in the middle of a blizzard in December."

Andy Bollinger

‘I fell into a sea of grass and disappeared among the shady blades.' This is the line that opens Jane's Addiction's ‘Summertime Rolls,' and captures the season for me, especially since I'm a farm worker."

Kirsten Seabaugh

"I could very easily spend the entire summer listening to the Beach Boys catalog. But if I had to pick just one song, it would be ‘Sloop John B.' It makes me think of driving with the top down by the beach, basking in the sun."
