Baseball careers

The Southeast Missouri State University baseball team's season came to an end at the Ohio Valley Conference tournament Saturday. The Redhawks, who had a rough start to the year, made an impressive run late in the season to qualify for the tournament for the 18th consecutive time. After a win over Jacksonville State and Austin Peay, the Redhawks lost a close game to Eastern Illinois and were eliminated in a rematch against Austin Peay.

Kenton Parmley, a senior shortstop for Southeast, was recognized on the all-Ohio Valley Conference tournament team. While Parmley was the only Southeast player to be recognized for the honor, several Redhawks received other conference awards.

Senior third baseman Trenton Moses was named Ohio Valley Conference player of the year. This is the second time for Moses, an Advance native, to receive the award. It's also the first time a Southeast baseball player has received the award twice. Other Redhawks players recognized with end-of-season conference awards include: outfielder Derek Gibson, Parmley, starting pitcher Shae Simmons, outfielders Andy Lennington and Jason Blum, and DH Ryan Barnes.

Parmley, Moses and Simmons have had particularly outstanding baseball careers at Southeast. With next week's Major League Baseball draft ahead, it wouldn't be a surprise to see all three Redhawks start careers at the next level of play -- though Simmons is still eligible to continue at the college ranks.

Congratulations to all the athletes.
