High school roundup: St. Vincent earns trip to Class 1 state golf tournament

The St. Vincent boys golf team earned a trip to the Class 1 state tournament Wednesday.

The Indians carded a 347 to finish second behind Linn (311) at the Class 1 Sectional 1 tournament at The Golf Club at Deer Chase in Crocker, Mo.

Levi Gotto led the Indians with a 9-over-par 80. He tied for fourth place.

Sean Martin grabbed 13th place with an 87, and Kelly Welker tied for 15th with an 89.

Tim Schumer rounded out the Indians' scoring with a 91, which tied for 20th. Teammate Zac Heberlie tied for 29th with a 96.

The Indians will compete in the Class 1 state tournament May 14 and 15 at Fremont Hills Country Club in Nixa, Mo.

Class 2 Sectional 1

Kelly shot a 412 to finish in fifth place at Tapawingo National Golf Club in St. Louis.

The Hawks failed to get a golfer through to the state tournament. Derrick Garner just missed the cut with a 21-over-par 93, which placed him 22nd and two shots off going to the state tournament.

Saxony Lutheran's Collin Sprandel did punch his ticket to the state tournament with an 83, which placed him seventh.

GIRLS SOCCER

St. Vincent 5, De Soto 2

The Indians claimed the Jefferson County Conference title with the road win.

Abby Lappe scored twice and assisted on another goal for St. Vincent, which moved to 6-0 in the conference.

Holly Blandford scored a goal and assisted on both of Lappe's tallies.

Holly Cissell and Abby Ruessler also scored a goal for the Indians (19-2).

Kayla Seabaugh assisted on Blandford's goal.

St. Vincent jumped out to a 2-0 lead before De Soto scored twice in about a minute, but the Indians regained the lead about three minutes later. They entered halftime ahead 4-2.

Miranda Unterreiner recorded 15 saves in the first half before giving way to Katie Mattingly, who was returning from a broken wrist. Mattingly made eight saves in the second half.

Central 3, Fredericktown 0

Brooke Evans and Abby Shupert scored in the first half to help the Tigers earn the home win.

Central (7-11-1) went ahead 3-0 when the Blackcats scored an own goal.

Apple Thomas made two saves for the shutout.

BOYS TENNIS

Central 7, Farmington 2

The Tigers wrapped up their regular season with a home victory.

Ryan Watts rallied after dropping the first set 6-0 to win the next two 6-2, 10-6 for the win at No. 6 singles.

Central, which will host a district match Tuesday, finished 13-3 in dual meets.

Chase Hagerty struck out six, walked two and allowed three earned runs in a complete-game effort for the Tigers.

Christian Cavaness went 4 for 4, including a homer, and drove in two runs.

Matt Chism also drove in two runs for Central (5-14).
