High school roundup: Chaffee baseball team falls short in title game at own tourney

Shawnee struck for two runs in the second inning and made them stand up against host Chaffee in the championship game of the Red Devil baseball tournament Saturday.

The Red Devils scored a run in the fourth but couldn't strike again in the 2-1 loss. It was the Red Devils' second loss of the season.

Jared Walker went 2 for 3 in the loss.

Chaffee defeated Twin Rivers 2-1 earlier in the day to reach the title game.

Alex Davie earned the win against Twin Rivers.

Kennett 7, Central 6

Christian Cavaness went 3 for 4, including a double, in the Tigers' loss in a SEMO Conference tournament consolation contest.

Ramsey Scott doubled twice for Central.

Central jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Luke Hinkebein reached base with a leadoff triple and eventually scored on a passed ball.

Kennett took a 2-1 lead in the third when it scored two runs on three hits, one walk and two Central errors.

Central trimmed its deficit to 7-5 in the fifth when it scored three runs on three hits and two Kennett errors. Scott drove home a run with an RBI double, and Thomas Crocetti added an RBI single.

Central cut the lead to one in the sixth when Vance Toole plated a run with an RBI single.

Scott City splits

The Rams defeated Anna-Jonesboro 9-6 in the first game before falling 25-8 in the second contest.

Landon Robert picked up the win in the opener. He struck out three and walked three to improve to 2-2 this season.

"He kept the ball down," Scott City coach Lance Amick said.

Ryan Fortner went 3 for 4 with two RBIs, while Zach Carlyle went 2 for 3 with a pair of RBIs in the win.

The Rams surrendered 24 hits in the second game, which ended after five innings.

Robert tripled for Scott City (9-7).

St. Vincent splits

The Indians fell to Eureka 6-0 before defeating D.C. Everest of Weston, Wis., 3-2 on penalty kicks at the Tournament of Champions in Burlington, Iowa.

Miranda Unterreiner finished with 22 saves against Eureka, a Class 3 school from suburban St. Louis.

Kayla Seabaugh and Abby Ruessler scored during regulation against D.C. Everest. Storm French and Kylie Baer both had one assist.

The Indians converted four of their penalty kicks to three for the Evergreens.

French converted the winning penalty kick.

Abby Lappe, Kayla Winkler and Seabaugh also converted their penalty kicks for St. Vincent.

Unterreiner stopped two of the penalty kicks.

Unterreiner finished with 18 saves in the conest to help the Indians improve to 17-2 this season.

Central loses two

Central dropped a pair of 8-1 road decisions to strong St. Louis teams Eureka and Parkway West.

Ryan Watts notched both of Central's individual wins with victories at No. 6 singles in each match.
