Thursday, April 26, 2012

HOLCOMB, Mo. -- A 14-year-old student was struck by a vehicle after exiting a school bus Tuesday afternoon, the Daily Dunklin Democrat reported. According to Missouri State Highway Patrol Cpl. M.L. Scoggins, about 3:30 p.m., Richard Mathews, 46, of Malden, Mo., was traveling eastbound on Highway 25, just east of Holcomb when he attempted to pass a school bus and another vehicle, driven by Houston McElwrath, 18, of Kennett, Mo., on the right side. Mathews' vehicle traveled off the right side of the road, throwing debris onto McElwrath's vehicle and striking Shane Conder, 14, after he exited the school bus. Scoggins reported that the bus had all equipment activated. Conder suffered minor injuries and was taken by private vehicle to Twin Rivers Regional Medical Center in Kennett. Mathews' 1988 Jaguar suffered extensive damage. McElwrath's 2004 Chevrolet suffered minor damage.
