Doug Buchheit LAURA SIMON ~ lsimon@semissourian.com

Doug Buchheit, general merchandise manager of Buchheit Inc., has been a part of the family business his entire working career. "My earliest memories of working in the family business are hauling soybeans and making deliveries with Rudy Buchheit, my grandfather," he says. "As a young boy, I collected and sorted soda bottles, and as a teenager, I worked in the feed mill bagging feed and loading it for customers." After earning his college degree, he worked in other areas of the third-generation family business, leading to his current position. Buchheit and his staff of 30 are responsible for the selection, purchase, pricing, promotion and merchandising of products for the company's seven retail locations. Husband to Amy and father to daughters Jackie Twidwell and Tori Twidwell, Buchheit is a member of the Knights of Columbus, Catholic Campus Ministry Advisory Council and Habitat for Humanity.

What do you love about your work?

It is hard to put into words the enthusiasm, commitment and respect I have for this company. I am blessed that I am able to be an active member of something that has grown so much through the vision and hard work of my father and grandfather. I am grateful to be able to honor their heritage.

What inspires you?

My father and grandfather built our business with hard work and dedication. They listened to what our customers asked for and treated them fairly. Following in their footsteps is what inspires me.

What community issue is most important to you?

I realize I have been blessed with the opportunities presented to me throughout my life. I understand that there are others who have not been so fortunate and have been dealt a tougher hand. So, helping those people who want to put sweat equity into their own home with the help of Habitat for Humanity is the cause that's most important to me and our company.
