Seabees anniversary

Veterans in all branches of the military are often recognized, and deservedly so. But one unit probably not as well know by the public will soon celebrate a major milestone.

Monday marks the 70th anniversary of the Seabees' founding. Local Seabees and others from the community will honor this group of veterans with a plaque dedication Saturday. With funds raised by the Seabee Chapter Island 5 and additional support from Ford and Sons Funeral Home, a new 16-inch-diameter plaque will recognize the significant accomplishments of these heroes.

From constructing bases to removing the Saddam Hussein statues in Iraq, the Seabees have been instrumental in the country's military efforts and deserve our thanks and support.

The dedication will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday at Cape County Park. Along with the 50 Seabee veterans expected to be on hand, organizers encourage other veterans and the public to attend this special event.

Veterans in all branches of the military are to be commended. Because of their bravery and sacrifice we enjoy many freedoms. The anniversary of the Seabees is a good time to remember the efforts of those who have served and the many who continue to do so.
