CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. -- A recent Nature Center at Night event "Habitat for Bluebirds" welcomed guests of all ages to learn how to be a good bluebird landlord. An interactive session led participants in construction their own bluebird nest box to take home. Attendees learned how to attract bluebirds, the different styles of nest boxes, where to put them, and how to respond to the bluebird's arch enemy, the house sparrow.

"Everyone can impact bluebird populations," said Steven Juhlin, assistant Nature Center Manager. "These Discover Nature events are designed to teach children and adults appropriate ways to protect and conserve our wildlife so they can teach future generations."

The bluebird is the state bird of Missouri. Juhlin said the birds are a joy to watch and attract to backyards. Bluebirds play a vital role in controlling insect populations and they are a symbol of conservation success in Missouri.

This workshop is an example of how the Missouri Department of Conservation helps people discover nature and conserve Missouri's forests, fish and wildlife.
