Talent showcase

Cape Girardeau might not boast the big lights of New York and Los Angeles, but there's still plenty of talent in the area.

Tomorrow the Heartland Talent Showcase will host its first talent competition in the area. The show will include three age groups: Junior, ages 6 to 11; Senior B, ages 12 to 16; and Senior A, ages 17 to 22. Sikeston native and 2008 winner of "America's Got Talent" Neal E. Boyd will serve as the master of ceremonies and perform as a guest singer.

While Cape Girardeau will be the location of the first showcase, other events will be held elsewhere in Southeast Missouri, Southern Illinois, western Kentucky and northeast Arkansas. The finals competition will take place the first weekend in October and potentially be held in Cape Girardeau.

Tomorrow's event starts at 7 p.m. at the Central Junior High School auditorium. Tickets, priced at $10, are available for purchase at Shivelbines Music Store in Cape Girardeau and Collins Music in Sikeston, Mo. Tickets will also be sold at the door for $15. Proceeds will help promote the preliminary contests, fund the final competition and go toward cash prizes for the winners.

Hats off to the organizers for making this opportunity available to the area's talented young people.
