Art reception

Those who follow local art are well aware of the impressive exhibits on display in Cape Girardeau's art galleries. But good artwork can be more than a thing of beauty. It can inspire or bring attention to important issues.

This Saturday Cape Girardeau's Community Caring Council and the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri will join forces to host an event that will put a spotlight on the issue of homelessness. The exhibit, which is on display through Jan. 28 at the arts council, is called "Opening Doors to the Homeless" and includes artwork by individuals who have been affected by homelessness -- either through firsthand experience or as a supporter of those who have been homeless.

Those attending the reception will hear from Community Caring Council representatives on homelessness in Cape Girardeau. Additionally, much of the artwork will be available for purchase, with 70 percent of proceeds going to the artist and the remainder to the Community Caring Council.

Saturday's reception will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. at the arts council gallery, 32 N. Main St. in Cape Girardeau. We hope you consider attending. And thank you to the event organizers and artists for bringing attention to this important issue.
