John Raney Miller, 83, passed away Sunday, Jan. 1, 2012, at his home in Cape Girardeau.
He was born Nov. 10, 1928, in Cape Girardeau, to Ernest and Kitty Pounds Miller. He and Mary Lee Burciaga were married Oct. 20, 1951, in Cape Girardeau.
After graduating from Central High School, John honorably served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II from June 5, 1946, to May 15, 1947.
He returned to Cape Girardeau and graduated from Southeast Missouri State University, and then honorably served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean conflict from July 18, 1951, to Aug. 8, 1952.
John continued his education, earning a master's degree from Southern Illinois University. He was a career school principal, working in Cape Girardeau, Kirkwood, Mo., and Webster Groves, Mo. He and Mary returned to Cape Girardeau in 1991.
He was an avid fisherman and loved spending time with his family and friends at his cabin in the woods by the creek.
Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years, Mary Lee of Cape Girardeau; a brother, Joe (Rose) Miller of Bethlehem, Pa.; a sister, Mary Jane (Lou) Gerecke of Escondido, Calif.; many beloved nieces and nephews; and a host of dear friends and fellow teachers.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister and brother-in-law, Ernestine and Kermit Gerhardt.
Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to time of service Sunday at McCombs Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. at the funeral home, with the Rev. Mike Shupert officiating. Military honors will be conducted.
In lieu of flowers, the family appreciates memorials to Beulah Baptist Church of Des Arc, Mo., the Wounded Warrior Project or a charity of your choice.
