CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. -- Pvt. Clinton Sargent, of Cape Girardeau, recently completed his military training to become a combat engineer for Missouri National Guard's 1138th Engineer Sapper Company in Farmington and Fredericktown.

"I joined the Guard because I really wanted to serve my country," said Sargent.

He graduated from one-unit station training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., Nov. 18, 2011, and received the Soldier's Creed Award and the High Physical Training Award for his dedication and excellence during training.

Sargent served with Company E of the Recruit Sustainment program in Cape Girardeau. Through the program, he learned basic Army skills and values and became more familiar with his role as a Soldier in the Missouri Army National Guard.

Staff Sgt. Steven Bell, recruiter at the Cape Girardeau armory, said Sargent will be an asset to his new unit.

"He has a lot of determination and dedication," said Bell. "He constantly pushes himself to improve and be a better Soldier and Guardsman."

Sargent will begin serving with his new unit in January 2012.

Sargent is the son of Marilyn Sargent, of Cape Girardeau. He is a 2010 graduate of Cape Central High School.
