TAMMS, Ill. -- Charlene "Toots" Powles, 78, of Tamms died Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2011, at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.
She was born May 27, 1933, in Chicago, daughter of Taft and Zethel Vick Cox. She and Donald Hunter were married Oct. 25, 1952. He preceded her in death Aug. 18, 1981. She and Howard Powles were married July 4, 1985.
Powles was a member of Tamms Methodist Church. She had worked as head cashier at Tamms State Bank and then at Security Bank in Cairo, Ill., where she also served on the board. She also worked as a bookkeeper at Beussink, Hey, Martin and Roe.
Survivors include her husband, Howard; a daughter, Lisa Downs of Salem, Ill.; two sons, Kerry Hunter of Du Quoin, Ill., Kyle Hunter of Cape Girardeau; two stepdaughters, Sandra Terbrak of Dongola, Ill., Betty Powles of Anna, Ill.; two stepsons, Stanley Powles of Golconda, Ill., Jeff Powles of Tamms; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her first husband; parents; two brothers, Michael Earl Cox and Bill Cox; and a grandson, Nicholas Downs, on June 16, 2011.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Crain Funeral Home in Tamms.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Brent Gordon officiating. Interment will be in St. John's Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Toys for Tots and will be accepted at the funeral home.
